Here is the latest from my fantasy comic. I've just realized that I do this comic story for several reasons. One, to practice my drawing. Two, to practice my inking and ability to create appealing line work over an already (hopefully) awesome drawing. Three, to create a story that is fun for me and people of all ages. I'm not one for vulgar or graphic content so hopefully the story remains kid safe. Fifth, it gives me purpose to keep drawing and improve on my drawing. This reason may be similar to number one, but often times I don't know what to draw, so this comic always remains something that I can work on, meanwhile improving my art.

Now that all the books in the series have been updated, I can share the 6th book cover I did, from over a year ago. Adding color, even digitally, takes longer than I ever remember. I always think to myself, "surely this won't take nearly as long as it did for me to draw," but then I rediscover how wrong I am every time. Either way, color usually ads more interest to things like this, so it's a fun little treasure in the end. If I get around to it, I'll repost the first few pages in color, or post something different I've been working on by end of week. Finally, the last three squares of the fourth page in my fantasy comic. I decided to make this post slightly more interesting by showing the sketches side by side with the final inked drawing. This one, like the previous panels, were inked digitally using Manga Studio Debut 4. It's a great program! I still miss some of the nuances of inking with real ink and brush, but the clean up and ease of digital inking is far more rewarding.
I plan on coloring this page as well as pages one and two. I'll be sure to post them as they become finished. It's been awhile since I posted anything so I thought I would post the next section of this comic that I was working on. Nothing too fancy, but some good line quality here and there. To continue showing my process, here is the sketch from my previous post, now inked. This inked drawing is a little different though from what I normally do. Traditionally, I use brush and ink to ink my drawings. I love using brush and ink, but it can be very time consuming, not to mention it uses up ink and wears on your brushes overtime. I've never been a fan of inking digitally, especially when comics artists I use to admire go digital and then their lines look mechanical and lose a lot of character. I think I did alright for my first try. I used the program, Manga Studio Debut 4, which supposedly was known for its sensitivity in inking. For anyone interested in inking digitally, I highly recommend this program. I got it only for a trial period, but will for sure buy it now.Lance Fryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12470487230122969149noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1262542323896575739.post-90745275529126749552013-01-06T09:08:00.001-08:002013-01-06T09:08:46.447-08:00Sketchy Goblin in the Snow

It's obvious that my comic posts will be more like twice a year. At any rate, I'm anxious to post something new so here is the next section of the comic story, in pencil, and with no speech bubbles. I do like to make up my own sound effect text sometimes. This comic isn't so much of me being a nerd and writing a story of fantasy, but rather a medium in which I can practice drawing and inking while hopefully telling a fun story. More to come, sooner than later.Lance Fryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12470487230122969149noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1262542323896575739.post-5046307576729426202012-12-27T15:40:00.002-08:002012-12-27T15:40:45.305-08:00Christmas Card for the Marcums

This holiday season was a busy one for me with lots of traveling, visits and excursions. I didn't have nor make the time to do my own Christmas card this year but I was lucky enough to help in creating a Christmas card for someone else. My long time friend from college, Julia Marcum, and her husband Chris Marcum wanted to do something fun and less traditional for a Christmas card. They wanted a caricature of themselves and their darling daughter Greta to grace the front of their Christmas card. At first, time wasn't on my side and I tried to tell Julia that I wouldn't have time for this, but she informed me they would just find another illustrator. I didn't want them to get a crappy Christmas card so I decided to do it myself after all and I'm very glad I did. Julia says the card was a hit with her family and friends and I must say I'm very pleased with the results myself.

Read Julia's take on the Christmas card on her own popular blog, www.chrislovesjulia.com. Here is the fourth cover I did for the series, Third Grade Detectives. The second and third book covers aren't as interesting in my opinion because I was still getting the style down. Plus the lighting is more interesting for this fourth book cover. Funny thing though, I feel I got a little better with each book cover I finished. That being said, I can still see mistakes now that I would like to fix. Oh well. The first five books or so have replaced the old ones in places like Amazon.com. You should check them out, though you can't see a larger version of the cover since it is still linked to the old art work. I'll post more of these new book covers as they are released.Lance Fryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12470487230122969149noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1262542323896575739.post-46004062203431370812012-04-28T22:46:00.000-07:002012-04-28T22:46:11.344-07:00More Mountain Goblins

At long last, the second half to page three from my untitled comic. I took the saturation down a bit for the colors and added in a texture for slightly more interest. Because of the natural orientation of monitors these days, I'm thinking page 4 will be more horizontal to fit the ratio better. Most popular web comics that have lengthy text are horizontal anyways. I wish this comic was something people could enjoy more regularly, but so far it's just a fun thing I do on occasion.Lance Fryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12470487230122969149noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1262542323896575739.post-9353849658581702562012-02-07T07:02:00.002-08:002012-04-28T22:54:33.243-07:00More Progress and More Color
Well I received some positive feedback from the last comic I posted so I thought I would make better use of my free time and continue working on this story while I have the time and the desire. The third page was split in half, so here is only half of page 3 (plus it reads better when blogger enlarges it). I wanted this much to be in color so you could get an idea of the colors I had in mind for the goblins and what the sword would look like as well. I doubt I'll do all future pages in color, but for now you can enjoy the possibilities. Hopefully, I'll be posting the other half of this page soon. Just a heads up, the main characters of my intended story are not these goblins. They're merely setting the stage for what's ahead.Lance Fryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12470487230122969149noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1262542323896575739.post-66435754277345500532012-01-25T12:52:00.000-08:002012-04-28T22:55:40.550-07:00Secret Project Revealed!
So, the book covers that I have been working on are close to being printed so I have permission to post one of the covers.

This is the cover for the first in the Third Grade Detectives series of books. They're short reads and intended, I think, for first graders. Not a bad read as far as first grade material goes. I'm only redoing the covers of the books and the inside illustrations stay the same (drawn by a different illustrator, not me). The publishing company I've been working with is Simon & Schuster, and working with them has been great! They're kind, understanding and polite. It's been a great opportunity working with them and I'm glad I can finally share this piece (though I finished this cover a year or so ago).

This is another illustration I did for Friend magazine this year. I believe it was for September or October. It was a fun assignment as you can see. I typically enjoy drawing peoples eyes, but since this article was about praying all the kids had to have their eyes closed. I still think it turned out pretty good. I've also been busy in my free time illustrating 4 book covers for a young kids book series. Once they get printed, I'll be able to post a few as examples. Hopefully they print sometime before spring, if not sooner.Lance Fryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12470487230122969149noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1262542323896575739.post-1467425592912716902011-08-18T17:47:00.000-07:002011-08-18T17:52:31.620-07:00Marriage and Death
So after 6 months I finally found time to ink the comic that was posted back in February as a work in progress. Adding color takes even more time so I just stopped after inking. Nothing really more to say other than I wish I could post more, but I'm either too lazy or too distracted to find time to draw/paint or otherwise create something cool to post online. I'm referring to my hopes of making an online web based comic strip, similar to an online graphic novel. I had planned out several characters, story lines and enough material for this supposed comic to go on for a long time, but with a full time job that already had me drawing and designing all day, a weekly full page comic was really not feasible to fit into my schedule. As much as I wanted it to happen, I don't think it will. If anything, I'll at least make a more dedicated website for my gag type comic strips that I already post on this blog. If I don't have time for a fully rendered and executed comic strip then I would at least make some sort of quick and simple comic just to get out the various ideas I have but never have time to do. Stay tuned for a slightly less zealous attempt at a weekly web comic sometime in the future...Or not.

Oh, and here is the first page of the graphic novel type of weekly web comic I started. Sucks to read an unfinished story, I know.
Lance Fryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12470487230122969149noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1262542323896575739.post-87972985446570119812010-09-22T12:26:00.000-07:002010-09-22T12:34:53.179-07:00My Spin on Goblins
Here is a neat little drawing I took from my sketch book, inked and colored. I don't sketch as much as I should, let alone post what I do to show my friends. I've had a few friends and lots of people I admire who have created and sustained a weekly web comic (some even daily). I think I'm done admiring and beginning to think I want to try my hand at it. Unfortunately a weekly web comic by me (in which I create any world and any situation) would not involve young single adults and their witty banter, even though I would still do those on occasion. I'll keep everyone posted, but for now enjoy these sketches which may or may not have anything to do with my new web comic idea.Lance Fryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12470487230122969149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1262542323896575739.post-57651798490375576482010-07-01T18:56:00.000-07:002010-07-01T19:02:13.356-07:00Samurai Lion
So a long time ago there was the theme of "brave" on Illustration Friday. Being my lazy self, I started this little sketch back then but never finished it. Two months later I finally sat down and finished it so that I could post it on this blog. And of course nothing says "brave" like a samurai lion. He's king of the jungle and of the katana. Boo-ya!Lance Fryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12470487230122969149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1262542323896575739.post-9992144116540578982010-06-20T08:09:00.000-07:002010-06-26T11:13:11.727-07:00Vague Dating Speech

Finally, after months and months of no comics I can finally post a new one. I really don't give myself enough times these days for comics and other random illustrations. When I'm not working my full time job, drawing and comics are sometimes the last things I want to come back to after a long day of designing. Usually when I'm done working I just want to play, run errands, hang with friends, or bake delicious goodies.
Lance Fryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12470487230122969149noreply@blogger.com8
